World Cup Ten Dance, Durban RSA
Never having had this opportunity before, the Federation of DanceSport South Africa, under the leadership of their president Mr. Bernard Johnson, hosted a successful event enjoyed by both the 17 couples from as many countries and spectators nationally and internationally.
The colourful opening ceremony showcasing South Africa and Durban City was professionally executed by the dancers of the Dean Bennewith Dance Company, followed with the march on by the competitors behind their country’s flags. The athletes code was read by the South African athlete representatives Nikki Losper assisted by her partner Rouvon Williams and the adjudicators’ oath by the South African official Mr. Kevin Juul.
After a short speech, the IDSF General Secretary declared the World cup open and the choir then sang the South African National Anthem. The whole opening ceremony was a touching moment with many developing goose bumps through the procedure.
The breaks between competition events were filled by various entertainment slots professionally executed, which kept the spectators entertained throughout the 7 hour event.
The excellent performances by all athletes were appreciated by all spectators who became very vocal with cheers for their favourites, lending to an exciting competition. A proud moment for South Africa when their representative on their first attempt and the country’s’ first ten dance representative achieved a semi-final position.
The finalist had to perform 30 dances before a winner was declared. The Gold medallist from Slovenia and also crowd favourite was Miha Vodicar and Nadiya Bychkova; Sliver went to the Russian representative Andrey Segunin and Evgenia Kuligina and Bronze to
the German representative Valetin Lusin and Renata Busheeva.
All competitors and panel of adjudicators were presented with a hand made replica of an elephant, one of the African big five animals found in our National Safari Parks.
