Olympic Congress Outcome

Avatar Carlos Freitag, President of the International DanceSport Federation, attended the XIII Olympic Congress which was held from 2 to 5 October in Copenhagen, DEN.

The Congress produced a list of 66 recommendation on the different themes and sub-themes it addressed over the four days. They can be downloaded under this link!

In Copenhagen, the IDSF President met with several IOC members to discuss a range of issues. In one of his periodic encounters with the IOC Honorary President for Life, HE Juan Antonio Samaranch, the recent advances made in developing a new judging system for DanceSport were the main topic.

Additionally, Freitag held formal conversations with Amar Addadi re the Mediterranean Games, with Kai Holmes re the Masters Games, and with Ron Froehlich re The World Games 2013.

The President of SportAccord (formerly the General Assocation of International Sports Federations) invited Carlos Freitag to present his vision on multi-sport games involving certain artistic and dance sports to the International Federation Forum. It will be held in Lausanne in November.

After his return from Denmark, President Freitag circulated an extensive report on the XIII Olympic Congress as well as his meetings to the Presidium Members. Here is an abridged version:

Sports need to be more accessible and understandable, and they sould be present on the new digital platforms such as facebook (click here), YouTube (click here) or twitter (click here) to reach young audiences. Click here for more detailed information provided by ARISF!

Sports must be transparent - and the audience must be able to participate directly in what is happening.

Promote youth sports.

The IOC will study its future collaboration with the International Federations and try to give more support to all of them.

Athletes have to be represented in all federations with voice and vote.

Denis Oswald, IOC member and President of the Association of the Olympic Summer Federations, proposed that the system for election of new sports on the Olympic Programme be changed.

J.C. Killy, FRA, famous Olympian and IOC member, proposed that the Olympic sports have to be reviewed frequently, and that only those which are in demand with the public should be included in the games.

The fight against doping needs  to be the priority for sports.

Sports should be the universal language which unites people and makes bridges for the future.

The three main objectives of the Olympic Movement  are: excellence, friendship and respect.
