Beyond Ballroom

Maurizio and Jade Mandorino, SUI The addition of breakin’ as a discipline of DanceSport to the programme of the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires, ARG, generated media coverage everywhere. Mainstream media such as CNN or the Washington Post took up on it. And so did many of the specialist publications – such as the RB BC One website and the most authoritative dance news site in Japan.

While some of the latter started to celebrate a win of medals by their dancers at two years out – “Japan is a kids’ dance powerhouse, getting the gold could be more than just a dream!” – others put in question whether a lifestyle/art could ever be considered sport. And then: DanceSport? That is ballroom dancing, isn’t it?

Well, it is much, much more than that! … And this is how a Standard dancer looks at it!
