WDSF Judging System 2.0
The DanceSport community at large will be able to download a turn-key system - at its current state of development - that has been designed for a specific purpose, but that has a considerable amount of flexibility built in too.
Olav Groehn, who wrote the source code for the system, puts its like this: "We have developed software that allows to take a new approach to judging performances in DanceSport. The general comparison of couple A with couple B is replaced by a fragmented evaluation of specific facets to each couple's performance."
"We have started this process four years ago with the development of Judging System 1.0 - aka "the New Judging System" - that had adjudicators assess five programme components in a dance performed as a solo in the final," Groehn says.
"Now we are at a point where the same or a very similar system can be used with as many as nine couples dancing in a heat during the preliminary rounds.
"While 2.0 as it is used in GrandSlam competition calls for a panel made up of 12 adjudicators, fewer judges could also be viable for a national event. The minimum would be three!
"We have a system that is very flexible and that can be scaled and adapted to the different requirements in DanceSport."
With all of the above possible and development bound to progress rapidly at many different fronts in the future, WDSF has appointed Olav Groehn as the coordinator of JUDSYS, the Judging System for DanceSport, where the colour green symbolises the fact that it is Open Source.
