SportAccord Report IV 11/04/2014

Baku 2015 Today was our second-to-last day at the SportAccord convention 2014. One particular meeting was most informative. It was the Youth in Sports open forum.

After the IOC launched the Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Singapore only in 2010, they are already firmly established, with the second edition taking place in Nanjing, CHN, later this year.

In the particular context of youth, the IOC encourages all recognised federations to create a 'Youth in Sports' commission within their structures. The forum then touched on some key points.

How came the global situation of young people being less active about? There is a necessity of using different tools to attract young people to sports again.

How did the social media come to play such an important role in sports. Answer: "Young people want their news in 'real time' - not 5 minutes later!"

The changing culture that one needs to be able to do everything within a sport to be on top! Specialising in one thing is no longer sufficient in an ever more rapidly changing world of sports.

A lot of food for thought for our Youth in Sports Commission in DanceSport that is in the process of
being fully established.

DanceSport was earmarked initially to be part of the first edition of the European Games, but the Baku 2015 organisers then limited participation to Olympic sports. With karate as the only non-Olympic exception! During Sportaccord, WDSF President Carlos Freitag resumed his conversations with the Baku 2015 organisers in an attempt to convince them to consider the inclusion of DanceSport in the games' accompanying programmes.
