WDSF Statement Regarding World B-Girl Ranking List

B-Girls Ranking

The World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) acknowledges the recent inquiries regarding  the current status of the WDSF Breaking World B-Girl Ranking List.

We would like to take this opportunity to provide clarity on the ranking methodology and address the concerns raised. The WDSF Breaking World Ranking List is governed by the WDSF Breaking Rules and Regulations Manual (BRRM) and is updated based on each athlete’s top four  performances within the past 12 months. Points earned in these competitions remain valid for 52 weeks from the date of the event.

It is important to emphasize that none of the following events contributed to the current WDSF Breaking Ranking List due to limited athlete quotas:

  • The Olympic Qualifier Series (OQS) in Shanghai (16-19 May 2024)
  • The Olympic Qualifier Series (OQS) in Budapest (20-23 June 2024)
  • The Olympic Games in Paris (9-10 August 2024)

Furthermore, in alignment with the Olympic Qualification System, ranking events were intentionally not held between 31 December 2023 and the Olympic Games Paris 2024. This strategic scheduling allowed athletes to focus solely on the last part of their Olympic qualification without the added pressure of additional ranking events. Consequently, by the end of the Olympic Games, many of the competition results included in the ranking had expired, leading to the current situation where many athletes have only one competition result contributing to their ranking.

Due the unique circumstances regarding ranking events this year, it is not unusual in the period immediately following the Olympic Games for some athletes to be ranked according to a single event. Until WDSF ranking events recommence later this year, therefore, the world rankings as they currently stand should be interpreted in conjunction with results from recent global Breaking competitions for a more accurate reflection of the global competitive landscape.

Furthermore, and according to Article 5.1.1 of the BRRM, in the event of a tie in points, the ranking is resolved based on the level of competition in which the athlete participated. WDSF event  categorization, in descending order of importance, is as follows:

  • WDSF World Championships (2022 edition only; no points were awarded at the 2023 edition)
  • WDSF Continental Championships
  • WDSF Breaking for Gold (BfG) World Series
  • WDSF BfG International Series
  • WDSF BfG Challenge Series

The recent rankings of B-Girl Raygun and B-Girl Riko have drawn particular attention. Both athletes earned 1,000 points in their respective events:

  • B-Girl Raygun placed first at the Oceania Continental Championships, October 2023 (ranking points will expire on 28 October 2024).
  • B-Girl Riko placed first at the Breaking for Gold World Series in Hong Kong, December 2023 (ranking points will expire on 16 December 2024).

Despite earning the same points, B-Girl Raygun’s result from the Continental Championship takes precedence according to Article 5.1.1 of the BRRM, which explains her higher ranking compared to B-Girl Riko.

The WDSF confirms that rankings will change after the above 12-month points expire, and when the next WDSF Breaking for Gold World Series is held in Shanghai in October 2024.

The WDSF remains steadfast in its commitment to transparency and fairness in the competitive ranking process. We trust that this explanation resolves any concerns regarding the methodology behind the current standings.
