The World DanceSport Federation (WDSF) continued its impactful Forum sessions with a focus on athlete well-being, the development of the Professional DanceSport in Standard and Latin disciplines, and the addition of new disciplines, all aimed at advancing DanceSport’s international prominence.
Pressure Affecting Long-term Engagement of Athletes
The day continued with a thought-provoking session led by WDSF’s Safeguarding Officer Isabelle Tay and moderated by Vice President for Sports, Nenad Jeftic. Joined by four-time WDSF Latin World Champions Marius Balan and Khrystyna Moshenska, alongside WDSF Athletes Commission Chair and WDSF Standard World Champion Anastasia Glazunova, the panel discussed the pressures and challenges that influence athletes’ long-term participation in DanceSport. From addressing issues like mental health and resilience to tackling serious concerns such as pressure on athletes, the session emphasized WDSF's proactive approach in safeguarding athletes, coaches, and teachers. As DanceSport continues to grow, WDSF remains committed to fostering a supportive and protective environment, ensuring the sport thrives on respect, well-being, and mutual support.
Professional Division Discussion: A Legacy of Dedication
In a session honouring years of commitment, WDSF President Shawn Tay introduced the topic of the Professional Division’s future, commending the dedication of PD Director Verena Sulek, whose unwavering leadership over the past 17 years has built a solid foundation for professional DanceSport. As WDSF Vice President for Legal Affairs Jim Fraser discussed future strategic opportunities, Sulek expressed her gratitude for the support and engagement of the DanceSport community. Her tenure has been marked by resilience and vision, qualities that set the stage for the division’s continued success and influence.
Expansion into New and Exciting Dance Disciplines
The forum also featured an inspiring session on the addition of new disciplines, led by WDSF Vice President for Sports Nenad Jeftic. Chair of the WDSF DDD Commission, Judith Martinez, introduced Hip Hop, Stage Dance, and Disco Dance as emerging DanceSport disciplines, explaining that new rules and standards are being established to keep pace with these dynamic styles. Highlighting the innovative nature of these additions, Judith encouraged National Member Bodies (NMBs) to collaborate with the commission for guidance and resources. Luis Vañó, President of the Spanish DanceSport Federation, presented the “FitKid” discipline, reinforcing WDSF’s ongoing efforts to adapt, diversify, and connect with a broader audience.
Innovative Marketing through the World Dancing League
The Director of the World Dancing League, Federico Fantini, introduced an engaging new marketing initiative featuring a competition format tailored for TV consumption, aligning DanceSport with modern sports formats such as football’s “Kings League.” With the aim of capturing the interest of younger DanceSport enthusiasts, this partnership exemplifies WDSF’s forward-thinking strategy to build a lasting, engaging connection with the next generation.
