Ivan and Nadiia Sivak, UKR Double world title winners at the recent 2013 IPC Wheelchair DanceSport World Championships, Ivan and Nadiia Sivak, UKR, have been voted as IPC Athlete of the Month for December with 48% of the public vote.

The Ukrainian husband and wife team picked up two golds in the duo Latin and duo Standard class 2 in Tokyo, JPN, propelling themselves further towards a prominent place in the annals of DanceSport.

Despite achieving a perfect score for their Tango at the Tokyo Olympic Park, the Sivaks commented that they did not have their best dance of all times: "We consider all dances that lead us to the victory to be the best ones."

The couple married in 2009 on the International Day of Dance, but they do not see their closeness as giving them an edge over their competitors.

"Feelings during trainings and competitions are always different and diverse -  a storm of feelings that we try to show with our bodies and emotions," they said. "Maybe that is what helps us to dance but it is not always like this."

The Sivaks' next major competition will be the 2014 Asian Para-Games, where wheelchair dance is one of the 23 sports which will be contested in Incheon, South Korea, from 18-24 October.

For them, dancing is a constant learning process which never ends:  "Step by step we improve everything that we already know and can do and keep learning more about this magnificent art of dancing."

The World DanceSport Federation congratulates the couple on receiving this top-level award. In 2008, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) has entered into a formal co-operation agreement with WDSF to jointly develop and promote Wheelchair DanceSport, and to work towards establishing a single international governing body including Wheelchair.
