2018 WDSF World Youth Breaking Championships

Only 10 days to go until the World Youth Breaking Championships!

In only 10 days, a total of 87 b-girls and b-boys will compete at the WDSF World Youth Breaking Championships in Kawasaki, JPN. The event is the final qualifier for the 2018 Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in October in Buenos Aires, ARG, where Breaking will be on the YOG programme for the first time ever.

The 29 b-girls and 58 b-boys who will vie for the 24 YOG places come from 34 different countries. To get to Kawasaki, all 87 had to first make their way through an online qualifying process before moving on to continental qualifiers.

Competition Format

The competition in Kawasaki will be split into 3 phases:

  • In phase 1, there will be one round per dancer in the battle format and the 32 best ranked b-boys and the 16 best ranked b-girls will progress to phase 2.
  • In phase 2, the round robin battles, each dancer will have three battles with two rounds each. The groups will be set up according to overall ranking.
  • Phase 3 is the knock-out phase, with the best 8 b-boys and b-girls in the quarterfinals; the best 4 b-boys and b-girls in the semi-finals; a battle for the 3rd place among both b-boys and b-girls; and finally a battle for the ultimate winner. During the knock-out phase, each battle will consist of four rounds.

Who Will Make It To The YOG?

The best 11 b-boys and the best 11 b-girls plus one Argentinian b-boy and b-girl will qualify for the YOG. Only one b-boy or b-girl per country can qualify. Argentina, as host of the YOG, has two places secured. Following the Championships in Kawasaki, all National Olympic Committees (NOCs) will take care of the final selection of their athletes for the 2018 YOG.
