Statement on the recent earthquakes affecting Türkiye and Syria
WDSF is deeply saddened by the news of the recent earthquakes which hit southern Türkiye on February 6, 2023, affecting millions in that country and neighbouring Syria. The first massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake in Kahramanmaraş province in the early hours of the day was followed by a second quake with a magnitude of 7.5 in Kahramanmaraş again only 9 hours later. The quakes are described as the most lethal in Turkish modern history.
This is a catastrophe, mitigated only by the valiant reaction of the Turkish people. As of February 13, more than 35,000 thousand people have lost their lives in Turkiye and Syria in the devastating aftermath of the disastrous earthquakes, with the official death toll still increasing. Thousands of buildings were reduced to rubble. Tens of thousands were trapped and lost their lives under the destroyed buildings. Communities, streets, homes and hospitals have collapsed as the countries grieve the devastating losses.
The WDSF Presidium expresses its profound sympathy and solidarity with everyone affected, including athletes, officials and members and supporters of our WDSF National Member Body, Türkiye Dans Sporları Federasyonu (TDSF). We extend deep condolences to the victims’ loved ones, welcome the relief efforts and sincerely hope for rapid access to effective humanitarian aid for all in need.
