Olympic Programme Commission Report

Tokyo DanceSport Press Conference In May 2014, the Organising Committee for the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 (TOCOG) invited all recognised and eligible sports to submit an application to have some of their events added to the programme of the Games in 2020.

WDSF was among the 26 Recognised International Sports Federations to submit an application and to campaign with a media event in Tokyo for the addition of DanceSport (Latin and Standard). At the end of September 2014, TOCOG proposed five new sports and 18 events in response to the new flexibility provided by Olympic Agenda 2020, the IOC’s strategic roadmap for the future of the Olympic Movement, to encourage innovation in the Olympic programme.

From that point onward and over a period of nearly two years, the Olympic Programme Commission spearheaded the efforts of evaluating the new sports with all their events and it published its full report to IOC members. This report was made public on 28 July. It makes for very interesting reading. It evidences clearly where the emphasis is put in assessing the sports and the respective values that they can bring to the Games.
