Eight sports were vying for a single opening on the programme of the 2020 Olympics.
After a vote taken by the IOC executive board yesterday in St Petersburg, five sports — karate, roller sports, sport climbing, wakeboarding and the Chinese martial art of wushu — were eliminated from contention.
The IOC executive board decided to submit wrestling, squash and baseball-softball to the full IOC Session in Buenos Aires, ARG, for a final decision on 8 September.
The final vote in September will bring the review process of the Olympic Sports Programme for the 2020 Olympic cycle to a conclusion. DanceSport - which was not conisdered for the shortlist in 2011 - will again be under consideration in the review for the 2024 Games that starts in 2015.
