36,000 Spectators
DanceSport was able to establish a new benchmark for public attendance at The World Games 2009 Kaohsiung already. 26,000 spectators for the two days of competition were officially recorded then, after two consecutive sellouts of the K-Arena on 24 and 25 July.
Official numbers for the spectators paying approximately 10 € each to watch the DanceSport events at The World Games 2013 Cali were not obtained until now.
Dr Rodrigo Otoya, the President of the Cali Local Organising Committee, released them in an interview with Colombian newspaper "El País." Asked whether he was surprised by the turnout for any of the sports, Dr Otoya answered:
"Yes, in DanceSport! I knew that it was a visual and popular sport, but having 18,000 spectators per night was a very welcome surprise ..."
A spectacular new attendance record! But the two sellouts brought about an unwanted side effect too: a thriving black market for the DanceSport tickets. Whether it is entirely true or not we don't know, but it is said that scalpers sold tickets for as much as twelve times their price in front of the bullring.
With 36,000 spectators DanceSport will surely end up in the top three or four sports when it comes to success at the gate, in terms of numbers as well as revenues.
