Vimeo on Demand II
The overall concept seems to meet community approval. A thumb up here, a favourable comment there, dancers on the social media signal their acceptance of our newest offer through “Vimeo on demand.” We even had the first pre-orders for “Do your dance” coming in.
And this is precisely the desired effect.
Without injecting a six-digit figure (in Euro) into production year after year, WDSF would not be able to provide you with quality coverage on many of its top events through YouTube. Advertising revenue generated through GoogleAd, even though growing steadily and higher than on many other YT channels, covered only 14.1 % of the production budget in 2013.
Sure, WDSF as a non-profit governing body has the responsibility to promote the sport without attaching any €-signs. But not to the extent of draining the treasury by doing so!
The WDSF DanceSport offer on “Vimeo on demand” will hopefully generate the revenue that is required to keep the system afloat – or at least somewhere near the surface.
The offer is straightforward, the prices are fair, and the “commercial” policy is firmly established:
- Only content on select events in the Adult and U-21 age groups are offered as pay-per view. Content on events in all other age groups will continue to be made available for free through YouTube.
- Pay-per-view programmes cover exclusively semi-final and final stages of an event. Earlier rounds are covered with a single camera focusing on a specific couple and the videos go up on YouTube.
- All programmes that are offered as pay-per-view are comparable in terms of their quality to those that WDSF commissions – or produces – for worldwide broadcasting: High Definition, multiple cameras, full graphics, stereo sound, etc.
- Matters that are subject to viewer preference are addressed after an audience survey has been conducted on the basis of the pilot programmes.
