The World Games 2017 Underway
At times it was very difficult to decide where best to focus one's attention: to one of the stages, to one of the screens, or to the streams of people moving up and down the catwalks.
The Opening Ceremony was a highly visual smorgasbord of themes ranging from sports to politics put together by artistic director Krzysztof Materna. Colours, music and - above all - dance were the key ingredients. The full spectrum of all three elements was used to drive the message home.
The solemn moments were provided when the Mayor of Wroclaw, Rafał Dutkiewicz, IWGA President José Perurena and IOC President Dr Thomas Bach took centre stage to address the capacity crowd of 40,000 at Wroclaw Stadium.
Dr Thomas Bach“The next few days will be a celebration of sport and its values. The World Games are a confirmation of the power of sport to unite us all. In sport, everyone is equal, no matter who you are or where you come from. Sport has the power to bring together all people.”
