IPC Wheelchair DanceSport announced on Monday that the 2014 European Championships will be held in Lomianki, POL, from 8 to 9 November.Around 150 athletes from nearly 20 countries will gather at the Integracyjne Centrum Sportowo Dydaktyczne (ICDS) Lomianki for the first European Championships since 2009, as the sport continues to develop its competition calendar.
Xavier Gonzalez, Chief Executive of the International Paralympic Committee said, “We are delighted to be working with the Swing Duet Association and Polish National Paralympic Committee to put on the latest major international wheelchair dance competition.
“It follows on from the 2013 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan, which attracted a great number of athletes to Asia, adding to the growing profile of the sport in that part of the world.
“With Lominaki 2014 we now have a chance to cement the popularity of wheelchair dance in Europe and I have no doubt that we will see some great performances.”
Iwona Ciok, President of the Local Organising Committee, said, “We are very proud to host the European Championships. It is a pleasure to welcome the competitors and adjudicators who are some of the best ambassadors and leaders of wheelchair DanceSport in the world.
“The Swing Duet Association expects that hosting this important event will significantly contribute to raising awareness of para-sport in the local community and in Poland. The Championships will show people once again the grace and skill involved in wheelchair dance.”
In April, IPC Wheelchair DanceSport announced that the 2014 calendar would feature eight competitions, including the inaugural Asian Pacific Cup in China and newly sanctioned meets in Serbia, Kazakhstan, Belgium and Russia. The five new events accompany existing competitions in Russia and Germany.
