Ice Dancing in 2014 Sochi
In its current format, the competition is divided into the Short Dance and the Free Dance. In Sochi, the latter is scheduled for today (from 15:00 UTC/GMT).
In the Free Dance, teams are free to choose their own rhythms, programme themes, and therefore music. While creativity is strongly encouraged, the dancers are also required to include certain elements in their free dances: step sequences, lifts, dance spins, and multi-rotation turns called "twizzles." Free dances are four minutes long and usually include multiple music cuts and tempi that help bring variety to the routine. Often teams strive to skate in difficult or unusual positions to gain difficulty points.
The judging of Ice Dance is done with a system that has inspired the WDSF Judging System 2.0, but that considers a Technical Elements Score in addition to the Programme Components Score.
After yesterday's short dance, Meryl Davis and Charlie White, USA, are in first and Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir, CAN, in second place. And that is not entirely without controversy!
